Prof. Fedulova S.A. group

Our work is devoted to investigation of the membrane properties of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). We study RGCs intrinsic firing patterns and ongoing activity with utilization of whole cell patch clamp recordings from ganglion cells in retinal flat-mounted preparation. Ionic conductances underlying excitability in RGCs are studied using combined biophysical, pharmacological, and single-cell RT-PCR approach. The main findings of our laboratory concerned the expression of potassium channels in RGCs and the role of different types of potassium conductances in generation RGCs firing patterns and shaping action potentials. We have shown the prominent role of Kv3 type potassium conductance in spike generation of these neurons. Also we study the physiological properties of different types of inward conductances, including voltage-gated sodium, calcium and prehyperpolarization-activated.
