Has been involved in the research of membrane ion channels in neuronal, cardiac and other cell types since 1980. Significantly contributed to the discovery of the phenomenon of Ca2+-dependent regulation of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (VGCCs) selectivity and permeation (J. Y. Shuba’s scientific career is closely associated with Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (BIPh) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), Kyiv, Ukraine, where he began to do research in 1980 as PhD student, received his two scientific degrees (PhD in 1983 and DSc in 1991) and worked on different positions, from junior scientist to the head of the laboratory, till March, 2007. Since March, 2007 Y. Shuba chairs the Department of neuromuscular physiology at BIPh NASU. In 2007-2016 he also held secondary appointment as deputy Director of the International center of molecular physiology NASU. Y. Shuba’s current research is aimed at establishing alterations in ion channel-dependent mechanisms of the regulation of smooth muscle, particularly bladder smooth muscle, contractility in such pathological conditions as diabetes and cancer. During 1990s and 2000s Y. Shuba’s research was primarily focused on investigation of the diversity of LVA Ca2+ channels in central, particularly thalamic neurons, on characterization of pharmacology and permeation of various types of recombinant LVA channels, on pharmacology and regulation of various types of cardiac K+ channels with particular relevance to the endogenous and exogenous mechanisms of cardioprotection. During the period of 1993-96 Y. Shuba worked as Research Assistant Professor at Georgetown University (Washington, DC, USA) where in collaboration with Prof. M. Morad he studied the mechanisms of ß-adrenergic regulation of cardiac Na+-Ca2+ exchanger and pharmacology of cardiac K+ channels. After returning to his home institution he continued to carry fruitful collaborations with several foreign laboratories which generated a number of important publications in scientific literature: Laboratory of Cell Physiology at University of Lille1 (France) headed by Prof. N. Prevarskaya on characterization of membrane ion channels in prostate cancer epithelial cells and their involvement in carcinogenensis, laboratory of Prof. S. Skatchkov at Central Caribbean University (Puerto Rico, USA) on description of potassium conductance in glial cells, laboratory of Dr. M. Oz at United Arab University (Al Ain, UAE) on modulation of ion channels by endocannabinoids. Y. Shuba is very innovative; he developed two experimental techniques – double pipette technique for rapid dialysis of small cells (Pflüg. Arch, 1988, 415:767-773) and perfusion technique for Xenopus oocytes (Pflüg. Arch, 1996, 432:562-570). He was a recipient of several international research grants from International Science Foundation, Georgetown University, American Heart Association, Fogarty foundation and INTAS. He authored and co-authored a number of seminal reviews, wrote a handbook on molecular physiology of ion channels (in Ukrainian). His research is well known in the international scientific community.
