June 4-8 2014 - VI Congress of Ukrainian Society for Neuroscience
The VI Congress of USN was dedicated to the 90 years anniversary of famous Ukrainian neuroscientist Platon Kostyuk. The Congress was held on June 4-8, 2014. Scientific program of this meeting included plenary lectures, symposia and poster sessions. This meeting intended to provide a forum for neuroscientists working on molecular, structural and functional aspects of the nervous system in both animals and humans to present and discuss their latest findings. Since the first Congress in 1998, this meeting is attracting about 300 participants each time. For the first time the framework of the Congress included nationwide school-seminar of the students of Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine uniting students of high grades of secondary schools. The students made scientific reports, attend lectures and became familiar with the work of neurobiological laboratories. Kiev Ukraine Chapter organized SfN supported Luncheon during the Congress to advocate the Chapter and SfN membership. In spite of political distress in Ukraine the congress collected famous guests and invited speakers from many countries: USA, UK, France, Sweden and Portugal. All the participants were completely satisfied by high level of plenary lectures and interesting social events.
May 14-16 2014 - 8th Student Workshop “Biophysical Methods of Research”
Student Workshop annually held in Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (Kiev, Ukraine) on Spring. The main aim of this event is to promote neuroscience for undergraduate students with their future recruiting to Master and PhD neuroscience programs at Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, the main Institute specialized in brain research in Ukraine. This year Workshop collected 56 participant – undergraduate students from Kiev, Lviv and Moscow universities. During 3 days 12 lectures and 8 practicals were delivered to students by scientists from Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, International Center of Molecular Physiology, Institute of Otolaryngology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Bogomolets National Medical University.
April 7-13 2014 - BAW
Kiev Ukraine Chapter organised Brain Awareness Week in Ukraine. BAW events directed to the different social strata: from children to undergraduate students, from general public to famous politicians. BAW events were organized in a form of lectures and practical seminars as well as a public round table, where the leading scientists from Institutes of National Academy of Science delivered lectures about brain disorders to have a discussion in a scientific format with lay public.
Round Table "Brain - the most complex system of the Universe"
We organised several scientific lectures by the leading Ukrainian scientists in a comprehensible format to wide audience who are not experts in the field of neurophysiology, in order to familiarize with modern ideas about the brain. Politicians and journalists were invited to the public round table to promote such events in Ukraine.
1. Welcome speech of academician Prof. Oleg Krishtal
2. Natalia Shulha, PhD, Director of Ukrainian Science Club: “From naivety to consciousness”
3. Nana Voitenko, PhD, Dr. Sci, Deputy Director of Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology “What we know about pain?”
4. Pavell Belan PhD, Dr. Sci, - Head of Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology “Brain: beauty and mystery”
In parallel, a set of activities for children (age 6-12) were performed, such as mini-lectures and practical seminars. The children got an opportunity to know a neuron structure, main organization and functioning of neuronal networks to sense of touching, hearing, eyesight, and keeping them healthy, to see popular science films and experiments that demonstrate brain function. Young scientists from Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology and and graduated students from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Bogomolets National Medical University delivered lectures at Kiev’s schools and in Bogomolets Institute of Physiology.School students also participated in practical seminars organized by a staff of Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology and International Center of Molecular Physiology where they painted neurons with its structure and looked inside the different tissues samples using a binocular and microscope.
One whole day young scientists from Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology and International Center of Molecular Physiology spent in orphanage delivering lectures and practical seminars to kids from 5 to 15 years old. A lot of schematic painted illustrations and video animations were also prepared, including printed russian version of "It’s Mindboggling!" (by Dana Foundation). Important information about human habits, noxious and harmful to health, were highlighted.
April 24-26 2013
Chapter members participated in organization of 7th workshop “Biophysical Methods of Research” held at Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology on April 24-26, 2013.
56 undergraduate students form Ukrainian and Russian Universities took part in the Workshop. The main aim of this event was to promote neuroscience for
undergraduate students with their future recruiting to Master and PhD neuroscience programs at Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, the main Institute
specialized in brain research in Ukraine. Kiev Chapter organized a luncheon for students and tutors there importance of neuroscience research has been
March 11-22 2013
During the Brain Awareness Week in Ukraine lead scientists and young neurophysiologists gladly welcomed elementary, middle and high school students to the
Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology. During these days more than 300 students visited the Institute. Schoolchildren were involved in measuring tactile and
temperature sensitivity. They examined different neuronal cell types through a microscope and drew them. Lectures were presented in accessible and interesting
form, so that even elementary school students could make conclusions without assistance. They clearly understood the necessity of “training” their brain to
improve memory and intellectual activity. Tobacco, drug and alcohol abuse and their influence on brain function and health were also highlighted.
Lectures were also delivered at boarding school for students having impaired hearing, at organisation for senior people and to non-mediacal University
Chapter members together with Ukrainian Society for Neuroscience and Ukrainian Science Club, organized a roundtable on "Brain disorders: the standpoint of
contemporary science", held in Kiev House of Scientists at March 22, 2013. This event was open for public and invited leading scientists of the Institute of
Physiology and Institute of Neurosurgery, delivered three lectures to a wide range of listeners, including politicians, journalists and prominent cultural figures. Lectures:
Nana Voitenko, PhD, DrSci: "World Brain Awareness Week"
Victor Dosenko, MD, PhD, DrSci: "Molecular secrets of mental disorders (Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, drug addiction, alcoholism)";
Volodymir Medvedev, MD, PhD: "Stem cells: a story about what else there is";
Over 100 participants filled the large hall of the House of Scientists in Kyiv to take part in interesting round table and discussion.
October 6 2013
Chapter Meeting will be organized during II International symposium "Molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission regulation" to mark the 80th anniversary of
Academician V.I. Skok (1932-2003)held at Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology at October 6 – 9, http://usn.org.ua/en/. During the
Meeting the BAW 2013 activities will be discussed.
